Google Ads for Law Firms: Setup From Scratch

Initial setup covers a Google Business Profile listing, call and form tracking, 2–3 search campaigns and training: 5–7 working days, then you run it.

The problem

A law practice gets most of its clients from referrals, while traffic from Google stays accidental. Enquiries land in email, messengers and phone calls, and nobody counts them: there is no way to say how many cases came from search and how many from word of mouth. When the owner tries to run ads personally, a monthly click budget of $250–400 is spread across every practice area at once, and in two weeks the money is gone with no idea which service actually pays back.

The second source of loss is invisibility in local search. Without a filled-in Google Business Profile the firm does not appear in the map pack for queries like "lawyer near me" or "attorney + neighbourhood", and that is 20–40% of local enquiries in legal services. Organic visibility is a separate track — local SEO for practice-area pages works on a horizon of months, while paid search brings enquiries in days. Dependence on an agency costs separately: on small budgets a monthly retainer for ad management often equals the click budget itself, so the firm wants to learn to run the account in-house.

What makes it hard

Google moderates legal services more strictly than most verticals: promises of outcome ("we will win your case", "guaranteed divorce without court"), pressure wording and some terms in headlines are not allowed. Ad copy has to be written neutrally, otherwise the campaign is paused in review and the learning phase restarts. During the first 1–2 weeks the Google Ads algorithm is collecting data, so cost per enquiry in that period is not representative — conclusions are drawn after the first full month.

The second constraint is account ownership. Google Ads, Google Analytics 4 and Business Profile are created on the firm's own email, and the contractor is granted access only: otherwise, when the performer changes, campaign history and listing reviews stay in someone else's account. Enquiry tracking also has to plug into whatever the firm already uses — website form submissions, calls and messenger clicks must register as conversions and land in the CRM lead pipeline (KeyCRM, Odoo or similar) without manual re-entry.

How we solve it

The initial setup splits into two stages of a few working days each.

  1. 1. Pick 2–3 practice areas to start with (for example corporate law, family cases, debt enforcement) and fix the monthly click budget — spreading it across every service of the firm at launch is not an option.
  2. 2. Build out the Google Business Profile listing: categories, opening hours, service area, photos of the office and team, link to the website. Posts and review replies are then handled by the firm's own team.
  3. 3. Set up Google Analytics 4 and conversions: form submission on the site, click-to-call, messenger click. Each event is imported into Google Ads as a conversion.
  4. 4. Connect enquiries to the CRM — leads drop into the pipeline automatically with a source tag, so you see cost per enquiry by practice area rather than one blended number.
  5. 5. Collect keywords per practice area, build negative lists (job seekers, "free online consultation", study-related queries) and launch up to three search campaigns with neutral copy that passes legal-vertical review.
  6. 6. Run a screen-recorded training session: how to read reports, change budgets, pause weak keywords, add negatives. The recording stays with the firm.
  7. 7. After one month — an account audit: what to pause, where to shift budget, which practice areas deliver cheap enquiries.

What drives the price and timeline

A one-off Google Ads setup for a law firm runs roughly $450–1,100 (€420–1,000), depending on how many practice areas you launch and whether the website needs extra web development work for conversion tracking and CRM integration. Payment is usually 50/50: half upfront, half after campaigns go live. Timeline — 5–7 working days: about 3 days for the listing and analytics, 4 for campaigns and training. A standalone account audit on request starts at about $120.

The click budget is paid to Google directly and is not part of the setup fee: for legal services in a large city, $250–400 per month is realistic at the start. The main price driver is not the number of ads but the state of the technical side — if the site has no working forms or events, the web and analytics work adds a few days. Ongoing management is optional: after the training the firm's team runs the account, and the contractor is brought in for specific tasks such as audits, SEO for practice-area pages or a new campaign.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to set up Google Ads for a law firm?

A one-off setup on the market costs roughly $450–1,100: Business Profile listing, analytics with conversions, up to three search campaigns and training. The click budget is paid to Google separately, around $250–400 per month at the start.

How long does it take to launch ads from scratch?

5–7 working days: about 3 days for the Google Business Profile listing and enquiry tracking, another 4 for keyword research, campaign launch and training. The first 1–2 weeks are the learning phase, so cost per enquiry is judged after the first full month.

Can I run the ads myself without an agency?

Yes, if the accounts are created on your own company email and you get a screen-recorded training session. The owner or an office manager changes budgets, adds negative keywords and reads reports in-house, bringing a contractor in for an audit or a new practice area.

Why does Google disapprove lawyer ads?

The legal vertical is reviewed more strictly: you cannot promise case outcomes, use pressure tactics or certain wording in headlines. Copy is written neutrally — about the practice area and the consultation format, with no guarantees.

How do I track leads if people call or message instead of filling a form?

Click-to-call and messenger clicks are configured as separate conversions in Google Analytics 4 and imported into Google Ads. Together with form submissions they flow into the CRM with a source tag, so cost per enquiry is visible for each practice area.
